Green Gone Bad

March 13th, 2009

First off, can I just say that I am writing this entry in Vi? Vi sucks… It does, however, give the impression that I’m hacking away in a heavy terminal session rather than updating my blog…

So I was in the Apple Store this week, picking up a copy of Apple Care. I can’t believe it’s been a year since I got my MacBook Pro. I always wait until the last day before buying Apple Care as the memory of what I paid for my Mac has faded and then I don’t feel that my laptop was $400 more than it actually was.

While I find it really expensive, I had it on my PowerBook and it more than paid for itself when I needed a new hard drive and then a replacement LCD. Of course I’m getting dangerously close to a rat hole so let’s continue.

I trundle down there and all goes well. The typically slick Apple purchasing procedure where you just talk to a guy and their wireless point of purchase pods do the rest. No lines and little waiting which begs the question of why Apple is the only retailer with this set up.

They even email your receipt based on your credit card number and Apple knows my Visa number very well. Buddy goes in the back to get my box, returns and I sign for my purchase.

Me: Can I have a bag?
Buddy: We don’t do bags anymore. We’re doing the green thing…

Seriously? I have to walk back to my office with this over-priced box in my hand? They don’t even have a paper bag? What the hell…

Apple Store

Apple Store

Finally Vancouver is getting an honest to goodness Apple Store. I had read about a new location but there have been rumors for years.

Imagine my glee when I found myself in Pacific Center today and stumbled across the new location. No word on when it’s to open.

OS Thoughts Circa October

January 29th, 2008

Clearing out the old drafts…

October is turning out to be an excellent month for new operating systems. Ubuntu 7.10 is being released on Thursday. I’ve been using Ubuntu at work for a while now and I can’t wait to update. Price is free.

Apple has finally announced the release date for Leopard 10.5 is October 26th. I decided to do the pre-order thing and that means I’ll have my copy on the 26th. Well, hopefully. Purolator are not exactly good at delivering things which is odd given that is what they do.

Bonus points to Apple for charging Canadians the same price as they do ‘Mericans. Now if only they would do the same thing with their hardware… I also took advantage of my educational discount to get it for $115.

So Ubuntu is free and Leopard is $129. What does Microshaft charge? $499 And it sucks… If you decide to go with the 5 year old XP Professional, you’re still looking at $440

To be fair, my Media Center runs Vista and Media Center works just great. I’m sure my happiness has a lot to do with the fact that I never actually use Vista. Anyway I needed to bank an October post plus I’m all excited about the new OS’s coming out. I hate to miss a chance to slam Microshaft :)

So that is all. See y’all in November…

Entry 101 Circa Summer of 2004

Clearing out the old drafts…

Nothing much to report here… I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my week off and am really looking forward to starting work next week. Most of the days were spent catching up with people though not all (Dan, I’m on it! Carmen, you too). While the balance of my time was spent doing nothing and/or shopping for a much required wardrobe update.

The Shnewt’s have graciously offered to let me borrow a spare G3 that they have which I’m tres excited about! Seeing that I’ll be working on a Mac project and have basically zero experience, this will help me get up to speed. I’ve been curious about Apple but the entry price is way too high to experiment with one of my own. I’m happy to have Linux around but

Apparently I got distracted by something shiny while composing this post back in August of 2004. That seems so long ago, mostly because it was. I recall I had just been hired by Schemasoft and was about to take a big drink of Apple Kool-Aid. We all know how that turned out…
