A waste of bits and bandwidth

This has been a long week… It has been for everyone but at least will can still laugh about it. God knows we have the experience…

Overall I feel pretty good and I’m not really stressing out over it. Everyone just feels that the sooner the better, even if that means being shown the door.

[rant] Now, people are whining about how the page looks in IE… Yes I am aware of it and I’ll try to look into it this weekend. There was a time when I thought that IE was a great browser and it actually is; it’s just behind in the times. The problem is Microshaft and their monopoly.

They have over 90% of the market and that means they have no reason to innovate.

If you haven’t tried tabbed browsing you have no idea on what you are missing out on. Microshaft is coming out with a popup blocker in their next release… Give me a break, Mozilla has had it forever.

You can’t remove IE, so therefore you can’t screw it up. Go out and try something different. Just try it and I’d be surprised if you went back to IE. Thank you. [/rant]

It’s been another geeky weekend… Nothing really to report except that I rebuilt a couple of boxes swapping XP for Linux on one and Linux for Server 2000 on another.

That was Saturday and today has been more focused on doing mundane household stuff. Somehow my apartment is still looking messy. I should hang out with Rachel a little more for inspiration.

I’m also trying to get some of the old pages back up but still haven’t decided on the best way to do it. I found this great blog tool that creates photo galleries very easily. The sucky part is that it displays an ad on the page. I wouldn’t have a problem if it was just a link to them but it’s an ad for different products.

Monday I find out if I still have a job and if I do, which of my friends doesn’t. And you thought your Monday sucks…

It’s amazing how fast your day goes when it’s mostly spent in meetings. At work we finally announced that Infowave closed a deal to buy Telispark. They’re a great fit with us and are going to bring (hopefully) a lot of revenue in the future. By future I mean like Q1. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that in any sort of situation like this is that there will be the inevitable ‘realignments’ of personnel. I’m 90% certain that my department is ok, but everyone is on edge to a certain degree. Until the axe falls, you never really feel safe.

Some people have more to fear than others and they know it. It’s shitty to say goodbye to friends no matter who is leaving. Some are in full scale panic, others quietly resigned to accept their fate.

As I said, I’m pretty sure my department will be left alone but it’s a bit of a stressful situation. Particularly so, when I quit my job to return back to this. Some will go Friday and the rest will told by Monday. All in all, it’s not much fun right now.

The even better news is that this is a really a turning point in the history of Infowave. I think we could finally be on our way to making something of ourselves and get over this constant layoff bullshit. Of course we had similar feelings in the heyday of Compaq as well and that went nowhere.

It all looked so promising this morning… The snow started to fly, I checked my mail but no one had bailed yet. Then finally the first “I’ll be working from home today” email appeared and it was an avalanche from there. Few would be in today. A snow day!

It would appear that the snowfall predictions were once again, optimistic. Oh yeah, a few times the snow was really flying and looked to be impressive, but it never amounted to much. Truthfully, I knew I could make it in but I was more worried about returning to the safety of downtown this evening.

Still it looks nice and it was a fun day. Tomorrow could be interesting when the rain hits…

The Paris Dakar rally is on again and it’s a never ending source of fasicination for me. 11,000 kms over 18 days wherever the route takes them. If you get SpeedTV you should really check it out even just for the scenery. Barren yet breathtaking…

This is great! It’s finally working and the layout is as I intended.

Now I guess I need to decide what to do about the old site. I’ve taken it off the server but have plans to put some of it back up. The question is how to do it; incorporate it into the new site or just put the pages up and point to them. That seems like the easiest idea.

So the snow storm from hell is due here in a few hours and I smell a SNOW DAY! Of course working for a technology company (and a wireless one at that) means I don’t actually need to be in the office to be working. I guess we’ll see how it looks in the morning and maybe go in for a bit and return to work from home in the afternoon.

I have fears of being trapped in Burnaby so maybe I’ll just work from home. The train never handles snow well and with up to 30cms predicted, it could be hell. Keep in mind, this is Vancouver. We only need the threat of snow to throw the city into anarchy, let alone when we actually get some. A foot would be brutal.
