My review of HoudahSpot as seen on MacZOT.com
I’ve been testing HoudahSpot (pronouced HoudahSpot) and comparing it’s results to that of Spotlight. HoudahSpot uses a GUI to allow the use to search in granular detail for without need to know the complex commands required in Spotlight.
The test: I have an OmniOutliner file on my desktop called ‘clipboard.oo3′; it’s just a file for storing reminders, lists and the like. A search in HoudahSpot for ‘clip’ (no crazy filtering) returned 74 files. The same search using Spotlight returned 523 results and was faster. To be fair, Spotlight is looking at the file contents which is why it returned so many more results. I’m not sure if that’s the case for HoudahSpot or not.
Anyone who has used Spotlight knows that the GUI leaves a little to be desired and this is where HoudahSpot shines. The preview tab is great, even allowing for video files to be previewed.
HoudahSpot is a nice little app and I’m going to continue to play with it in the coming days. If you are a Mac user, you might want to have a look for yourself.
NOTE: If you’re seeing this on June 16, 2006 head over to MacZOT, you might be able to get a Free copy of HoudahSpot. Search easily in Tiger, Mac OS X, with HoudahSpot
