Mental Blogging…

…doesn’t work so well with FTP. Hence the reason that posts have been few and far between lately. I’ve experienced quite a few blogworthy happenings lately but so far I just think about them and oddly, they never materialize on the site. I have two posts sitting in the can that need a bit of finishing but, again, I haven’t clicked the Publish button.

Work has been pretty crazy lately. Our office wide Spanky vacation comes to an end on Monday as he and Kate are arriving back from Germany today. I believe he said something to the effect of ‘in the office physically on Monday and mentally on Wednesday’… Very good then; I guess this would be the tiime to book some time off and ask for a raise.

So I’m hip deep in boxes here, only packing things which I don’t use on a regular basis. This has given me pause as I’m 60% packed. All but the electronics and a handful of dishes and clothes remain. I always suspected that this was the case but this kinda solidified my hypothesis. I really wish Biff would give me a firm date on his return so I could book a van. I get the feeling that he’s avoiding me…

I’ve also thrown out a lot of crap. When I say throw out  you should read that as me taking it to the laundry room and leaving for my neighbours to pick over. My crap has been so popular I’ve taken to hiding it so that someone will get a little surprise later on but they’re gonna have to work for it. Can you imagine that? What kind of mind…

HoudahSpot on MacZOT

My review of HoudahSpot as seen on MacZOT.com

I’ve been testing HoudahSpot (pronouced HoudahSpot) and comparing it’s results to that of Spotlight. HoudahSpot uses a GUI to allow the use to search in granular detail for without need to know the complex commands required in Spotlight.

The test: I have an OmniOutliner file on my desktop called ‘clipboard.oo3′; it’s just a file for storing reminders, lists and the like. A search in HoudahSpot for ‘clip’ (no crazy filtering) returned 74 files. The same search using Spotlight returned 523 results and was faster. To be fair, Spotlight is looking at the file contents which is why it returned so many more results. I’m not sure if that’s the case for HoudahSpot or not.

Anyone who has used Spotlight knows that the GUI leaves a little to be desired and this is where HoudahSpot shines. The preview tab is great, even allowing for video files to be previewed.

HoudahSpot is a nice little app and I’m going to continue to play with it in the coming days. If you are a Mac user, you might want to have a look for yourself.

NOTE: If you’re seeing this on June 16, 2006 head over to MacZOT, you might be able to get a Free copy of HoudahSpot. Search easily in Tiger, Mac OS X, with HoudahSpot

A bizarre and creepy use of Quicktime animation

Allow this video to load completely. Then click on the glowing objects to have the child interact with them. Pretty messed up stuff! :)
