Coveting

April 14th, 2005

So, I was browsing Apple.com as I often find myself doing and noted that Tiger is finally being released on April 29th and it’s looking great.

I’m trying very hard to find a way to justify a Powerbook but they’re so expensive. I could buy a heathen laptop and a lesser mac and still have a ton of cash left in my pocket. *ponders* I guess the big issue for me is that I really want to move to a laptop and be done with it. What I don’t want to do is decide to get an iBook (still pricey) and then regret not having bought a Powerbook. I figure you should always get what you want and be happy. When my MP3 player died I looked at an iPod and thought it was too much money so I got a flash player. 3 months later I bought an iPod and have never been so happy with a toy.

I was surprised to find that my BCIT student ID qualifies me for Apple’s student discount. Not a huge discount mind you but enough to just about cover the cost of my course which sort of makes it all worthwhile. *justifying*

I’ve slowly been cutting back on the number of machines I use and now could easily ‘make do’ with a laptop. My fileserver, which is really just a repository, could easily be replaced with an external HD. There’s a ton of crap on there that I’ll never use again; Windows NT, old versions of Partition Magic and tons of other, obsolete software.

Whatever, even if I decide to get one, it’ll be a while before I actually do it. If you haven’t already, it’s time to hit Windows Update after a number of patches were released on Tuesday.

Update

April 12th, 2005

Well, I chickened out on doing the full upgrade. Actually it just wasn’t required. I downloaded the upgrade, tweaked three files and ran a script. That’s it. A new database is up and running and no need to take the site down.

Now I need to learn some MySQL queries and I’ll be getting somewhere. Luckily for me, MiHwa is a database master so I think I’ll be picking her brain from time to time.

If only a new database could improve the quality of my posts…

Upgrading

April 12th, 2005

My hosting account has come up for renewel so I took the plunge and upgraded my account. I’ve more than doubled my storage space and now have access to MySQL.

So… I’m going to do a fresh install tonight and therefore the site will be down. Oh, the horror! Yeah, anyway… there are some backend changes that I’ve wanted to make and I figured that this is the time to do it.

Of course while the site is down you won’t see this message. Perhaps I’ll put up a temporary page.

In other news, I officially was approved to move into my new apartment and I’m inching closer to starting work. Bloody frustrating but it’ll be worth it in the end.

That is all.

Bloody Stumps

April 10th, 2005

Not much to report… Just that I have the first week of the Asian trip done. I finished up days six and seven today. I’m halfway there; one more week to go.

I have tons to do yet I was feeling guilty that I hadn’t done anymore on the trip so have a look. I have to prepare for work, set up a meeting with my financial advisor and notify everyone that I have ever met or done business with that I’ll have a new address come May 1st. Oh yeah, I might want to think about doing my taxes or something too…

Thanks to all of you for the kind wishes and multiple offers of a dining room table! I’m going to wait until I’m in before I get too crazy with the new furnishings. I might be in the market for a new sofa too so keep your eyes peeled for me.

Things take a turn…

April 8th, 2005

…a good turn for once. First though, thanks for all the birthday wishes. Biff, you need your mouth washed out with soap (and a kick in the junk) but I accept you have your own ’special way’ to send your wishes. I had a great dinner last night which served to remind me that I have wonderful friends. Not like I needed to be reminded though…

Today things finally started falling into place for me. First off, I decided to take the larger apartment down the hall. It’s gonna feels huge compared to this place. It’s not huge but this place is tiny.

Views of the North Shore, Stanley Park and the marina which I’m looking forward to. I’m also looking forward to the extra space and maybe, just maybe getting a dining room table for the first time in my adult life. I’m not looking forward to shelling out an extra $200 a month but what can you do? Move to Port Moody? I don’t think so…

I felt better about my decision when I got the call I had been waiting for and was offered the job I interviewed for last week. I hope it works out well and the money isn’t that bad… I thought it would be less than what they offered but it’s still not stellar. Compared to my current income which is nothing, it’s wonderful.

All in all, a good day…
