Rambling…

April 30th, 2004

FYI, if you’re unemployed and it’s a fine summer day, don’t mention to Spanky that you’re going to the beach… You kiss Catherine with that mouth? Tsk, tsk, tsk…

My interview went pretty well yesterday and I think I have a decent shot at getting an offer. Of course I always feel that way so I’ll make no predictions and won’t bring it up again.

Lately I finally jumped on the RSS bandwagon using SharpReader. It’s a nice, free reader though you will need to install the .NET Framework which didn’t thrill me but it’s not that big a deal. While I like it a lot there were a few things I didn’t care for such as not being able to sort my feeds.

Today I decided to give Bloglines a shot and I really like it. It’s web based so I can see my feeds on any PC I’m using. It also has a Tivo like feature in that it’ll monitor my feeds and make recommendations based on my subscriptions. It’s free and very cool.

Those of you who play Grand Theft Auto will be familiar with the Chatterbox station. Talk radio that is funny enough to listen to on it’s own. Guess what? I found the real version of it! The Phil Hendrie Show is too funny for words and is really worth a listen.

He has these ‘guests’ who have an incredibly stupid position or cause and present their case. For whatever reason the people who call in to the show do know that the ‘guest’ is part of the show and get really irate as they try to have an intelligent conversation.

One of the funniest were the two guys who felt that house cats should be banished to an island in the South Pacific. “We’re developing tiny parachutes to use in an air drop…” Naturally all these horrified cat lovers called in to defend their cats and the hilarity ensued.

“You know when your cat kills something and brings it to you? You know what that cat is saying to you? You’re next…”

One door closes…

…and another opens. Not surprisingly, I didn’t get the position that I had been interviewing for. I don’t feel bad about it as I knew all along that I was a long shot. I got to meet some really nice folks and you never know when our paths might cross again. Vancouver is a pretty small community.

Today I have another interview for a position that is very similar to the first and probably much more inline with my current skill level. I think I have a good shot at it as I do have some experience that they are looking for and that should work in my favour. It’s a contract to start but as I understand it there is a chance to be converted to permanent after the contract is over.

All I know is that I want to go to the beach! I need to convince Andrea to give me a Brazilan wax and then I’ll be all set. Now where’s my Speedo?

Some searches that have lead people to this site:

Like a kick to the head

April 27th, 2004

I had the second interview ay the still un-named company yesterday. The first meeting of the day went really well; just super people and I could tell that they’d be a pleasure to work with. (Not that I’d be working with them but I digress…)

Then there was the second meeting of the day where I met the guys that I’d be working with. Ten minutes in one of them goes “We’re looking for someone more seasoned…” Great. Now I can’t help but feel that even if I did somehow get the position these two would view me as a ‘tard.

Now to be fair to them, there was a hardware failure just before I got there and they weren’t much in the mood to dick around with me given that they had to stop in the middle of fixing it to meet me. Frankly, I’ve known all along that I was lacking in several areas but I do have the ability to ‘learn stuff’ as I go.

In total I met with six people and four think I’d be great and two who like me but question my experience. On numbers I should be fine but truthfully I would have to think the two carry a greater weight than the others. Foiled again.

Shnewt sent me this today. I guess I won’t spend too much time waiting for this dog to go up much further.

Oh, before I forget, Angelo has his new site up and it looks great. I spent a bit of time spamming his ‘Last Referers’ module and leaving immature comments. I have also set up an account and may start posting stories on the physics of cow tipping…

Black Imola

This weekend marked ten years since Ayrton Senna died at Imola. It was crazy to think I’ve been watching F1 for twelve years as I can recall that weekend like no other other. To think it has been ten years is amazing.

That weekend in 1994 was one of the blackest and just plain strange that anyone had ever seen. The disasters began on Friday when Rubens Barrichello’s Jordan launched off a curb violently slammed into the top of the barrier. It rolled back onto the track where it came to rest upside down. Barrichello was unconscious and he had swallowed his tongue so he was out for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday was even worse when Roland Ratzenberger crashed at high speed into the wall at Villeneuve Corner (named for the late Gilles Villeneuve). A front wing failure caused his Simtek to understeer into the barriers at 200mph. It came to a halt with Ratzenberger slumped in the wreck. He was beyond help but was flown to a hospital in Bologna, where he was declared dead a few minutes after arrival. He became the first driver to die at a race weekend in twelve years.

Sunday, the blackness continued… On the start Pedro Lamy’s Lotus was unsighted and clouted JJ Lehto’s stalled Benetton sending three wheels into the grandstand, injuring several spectators. The race was not stopped but run under the safety car while the mess was cleaned up. This would be the source of much speculation in the years to come.

Upon restarting the race, Senna (fittingly) lead the field away under heavy pressure from Michael Schumacher. At the start of the sixth lap Senna’s car went straight off at Tamburello Corner. In the impact the front suspension of the Williams came back and pierced Senna’s helmut. He was rushed by helicopter to Bologna where he also was pronouced dead.

The race was stopped to allow for a medical helicopter to land near the impact but it did resume. In one last shot the blackness struck again when during the second round of pit stops there was another accident in the pitlane. Michele Alboreto’s Minardi lost a wheel as he left the pits and the errant wheel bounced into the Ferrari mechanics. A Lotus mechanic was also hit by debris.

Senna was known to fly the Brazillian flag after he won a race. A flag was indeed found in the wreck of his car but it was an Austrian flag. He had intended to fly it to pay tribute to Roland Ratzenberger.

Yesterday was such a nice day and my brain was firing on all cylinders – something which hasn’t happened in a while. I gave Janice a call and told her that I wanted to swing by the Aquarium for a visit.

She always tells me to stop by and I live less than 15 minutes away but either forget to call or think of it during a monsoon. Anyway, yesterday was the day and I have to say I had a great time. It’s been years since I’ve been there and it’s really worth the visit.

I saw some really cool stuff and learned a number of interesting facts. Most important of these was that I never want to have kids. It must have been rugrat day as there were tons of ankle-biters around, ignoring their parents and running amuck. Still they were having fun and so was I.

After I had done my tour I gave her a call and she treated for lunch, how cool is that? It was nice to get caught up with her too. Being such a nice day we got a table near the beluga tank and enjoyed the sun.

I have a ton of pictures, some of which are actually good so I’ll look into posting them. I’ve been neglecting the Gallery even though my picture output has been increasing.

Angelo is actually working on a new layout and I got a sneak peek last night. It’s looking really good and he’s given me some ideas for a revamp of my name site which may or may not take place. No idea of when Angelo will get the new site up but it should be soon.
