To clarify…

March 19th, 2004

Thanks for the kind words everyone but you might have gotten the wrong meaning from the last post… ‘Not Moving Forward’ was from the rejection email as in “We’re not moving forward with your application because you are a ‘tard”. I didn’t really mean it to be about my life. Though now that I think about it, I guess it applies.

I’m giving tech one last shot but I’m thinking about other things as well. Tech isn’t what it used to be and frankly, I showed up to the party late. I’ve never made huge money in tech and those days are over. I just question why I would want to work 60 hours a week when I could make the same money or more for working 40 hours and having a life outside of work to boot.

The reality is that I only know gravel screens and software and software is the more attractive alternative at this point. Not from a financial standpoint but logically tech still makes more sense. Plus I’d hate to bail when tech is showing signs of life. They can’t all be sweatshops can they?

In other news you don’t care about, I have fixed my router. *touches wood* I was at Smoothwall downloading their software so that I could build my own firewall with a spare box I have when I wondered if I could re-flash the router with the old firmware.

Given that the router was toast, I figured it was worth a try. I re-flashed an older version and so far, so good. What is so poor is that the bad version of firmware was put out in November 2003 and still no patch. I certainly found tons of other people who are having the same issue. I think I’ll still install Smoothwall as it looks very cool and the box is just sitting here.

Oddly, I have noticed quite the surge in traffic over the past couple of days. Strange given that I haven’t been posting too much lately and I’ve seen a few odd search queries of an adult nature. Sorry peeps; no porn here apart from Janet’s boob…

Lastly, I added another day to the Asian trip archive. You just have to check back for updates as I don’t always post here on the same day.

That is all…

“I’ve never traveled but I want to”
…it may be time to update your “About” page!

    Hey Marky,

I hope you stick to the tech jobs …. you’re a smart guy and any company you land at would be better off!
On that front, if you are interested in some good reading, I recently added this site to my blogroll – http://weblogs.asp.net/jobsblog/. It has some nice useful info on what tech recruiters at Microsoft do and some of the tips (especially on resumes) are pretty handy.

    Good luck.

Hang in there Mark, like Karan says, you’re a smart guy and bring a lot to the table. The market is only getting better, and if you stick with it, something will come up.

And no, they’re not all sweatshops – I’m happy to be working some pretty normal hours these days, and don’t see that changing in the near future. I have heard about other software companies that are striving to re-introduce the concept of “life outside of work” to their employees, oddly enough it seems to be a selling point for prospective workers :-)
