Hooterville

Not much to report these days. I’m in Hooterville taking care of some things and visiting with the family. Some relatives are visiting from Edmonton and I thought I’d take the chance to visit them at the same time. I came up Thursday but I’m not sure when I’ll be back.

Nice to see everyone again. Plus we’re getting lots of stuff done around the house here and enjoying some nice weather as well.

Most importantly, it’s giving me some well needed time away from ‘my life’ so that I can think about things. There’s lots to think about…

Damn, damn, damn!

Tonight I figured that I’d post the next day in my trip to Asia series. I was a day ahead and would finally be able to upload a new day when I posted. I also decided it would be a good idea to back up my sites, so I sucked all my files down. Forgetting that I hadn’t uploaded the latest page, it was overwritten by the ‘Coming soon’ version, so nothing to add today. Typical of the way things are going lately.

Thanks to Daymented for pointing out that I should update my about page now that I have actually done a bit of traveling. I’m thinking about redoing that whole site as a) I have the time and b) the layout is a Dreamweaver template which always bugged me.

Karan passed along an interesting blog which is worth having a look at even if you aren’t looking for a job. Thanks buddy!

Filed under ‘Back from the dead’ I found an email from Carmen in my Inbox this morning which nearly caused me to fall out of my chair. I’d been thinking about her lately and usually when I’ve been thinking about someone they get a hold of me. How odd…

To clarify…

Thanks for the kind words everyone but you might have gotten the wrong meaning from the last post… ‘Not Moving Forward’ was from the rejection email as in “We’re not moving forward with your application because you are a ‘tard”. I didn’t really mean it to be about my life. Though now that I think about it, I guess it applies.

I’m giving tech one last shot but I’m thinking about other things as well. Tech isn’t what it used to be and frankly, I showed up to the party late. I’ve never made huge money in tech and those days are over. I just question why I would want to work 60 hours a week when I could make the same money or more for working 40 hours and having a life outside of work to boot.

The reality is that I only know gravel screens and software and software is the more attractive alternative at this point. Not from a financial standpoint but logically tech still makes more sense. Plus I’d hate to bail when tech is showing signs of life. They can’t all be sweatshops can they?

In other news you don’t care about, I have fixed my router. *touches wood* I was at Smoothwall downloading their software so that I could build my own firewall with a spare box I have when I wondered if I could re-flash the router with the old firmware.

Given that the router was toast, I figured it was worth a try. I re-flashed an older version and so far, so good. What is so poor is that the bad version of firmware was put out in November 2003 and still no patch. I certainly found tons of other people who are having the same issue. I think I’ll still install Smoothwall as it looks very cool and the box is just sitting here.

Oddly, I have noticed quite the surge in traffic over the past couple of days. Strange given that I haven’t been posting too much lately and I’ve seen a few odd search queries of an adult nature. Sorry peeps; no porn here apart from Janet’s boob…

Lastly, I added another day to the Asian trip archive. You just have to check back for updates as I don’t always post here on the same day.

That is all…

Not Moving Forward

I wish that I had more to say but at this point, I don’t. Had a good visit with Mom and Dad who left today after arriving on Friday. That kept me away from the computer for a bit but truthfully, I have nothing to add.

I was formally rejected for my interview which doesn’t surprise me. They said they had interviewed others while I was gone but I think they were being polite. Hell, I just appreciate them getting back to me. Most don’t bother to…

I know I blew it when I was in so it was no big deal. My head wasn’t there, be it from the jet lag or whatever. Doesn’t matter, I’m not even really looking for a job now though I know that I should be.

I’m in that “Is there something else I should be doing phase” that I am all to familiar with. It happens everytime I go through this crap. I’m starting to think that I should be doing something else but I can’t help but think I need to have one last go at tech.

I added a page to the Asia trip a few days ago. Been kinda slacking on that too.

One last thing, if you have an original Linksys 4 port router, I would not install the 1.45.7 firmware on it. I did and now I’m dropping my connection all the time if I have more than two computers running at a time. Annoying…

Free MP3′s

Now that I have a lot of free time on my hands, I have time to browse the web to extremes. In doing so I’ve found that there are still places to get free and legal MP3′s.

Notably, Amazon and Rolling Stone. I was cruising around downloading just about everything and came away with a tidy and eclectic collection of free music. Online Tonight is also a great resource for free MP3s.

In other news, I’ve been home for just over a week and I’m feeling back to normal. The jet lag was brutal and I still have a bad case of the travel bug. If I had anything to sell, I would and I’d be gone. Even the first few days I was back it was almost like I was homesick for Seoul. I just missed it all so much.

Not a very realistic outlook but a nice lifestyle if you can swing it. No work, just going out seeing new places, having fun, meeting people and spending money.

Even now Vancouver seems kinda pedestrian after all that I have seen. I love this city so much and used to get offended when people would complain about it but I now I understand. It doesn’t mean that they were right but to an extent, they had a point.
