Well, today was the day and I got the axe. We had heard that the layoffs had started in the morning and sure enough it was on. The planned meeting was a survivor meeting and I wasn’t invited. In total, about 20% of the company is gone after today. At least I didn’t go alone…
I’m fine with it and have no regrets at all. It was a good time while it lasted and better than where I was before. The severance package was much better this time round so no worries. Plus the CTO offered to give me a reference to anyone who was interested.
I’m not sure what the next step is. I guess I’ll take some time off before my trip and then start the 2004 job search! Oh joy… I hear that the market is better, so here’s hoping…
We hit the Shank Club which is the official IW watering hole when this sort of stuff happens. I’ve been there more times than I can count during my time at IW and frankly, I’m just relieved that this is over. Now I can move on again.
No worries, I’m fine. I always am…

you’re one cool dude- more than I can say for your ex company!
you must have read the “who moved my cheese” book. glad to hear you have it together mark, way to go. keep your sneakers tied around your neck, helps to be able to move quickly when the cheese gets moved. take care!….
Good for you for staying so positive, Mark. Maybe we can have you over to start reinforcing The Loft in your spare time? You will definitely have to come to the next Techvibes with me (drinks on Strydent and you might get a job out of it too)! Let me know when you are ready to look again and I will spread the word for you. You know where you can keep your foos skills sharp too!
Dude. As I sit beside your empty cube I can’t help but think that you may be the lucky one. As happy as I was when you came back, I’m now equally distraught with your absence. But what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger which makes you one of the strongest friends I have…
Know that you have many friends, many shoulders and the lost was not yours, but the ones you let you go.
So sorry.
Stay positive.
with you all the way buddy.
your positive outlook will get you through this and IW is on the losing end for having let you go.
